"The Soul Khaya near Lanseria offers spa therapy with a difference. Set in tranquil surroundings on the Lethabo-farm, one could easily forget that you left the hustle and bustle of nearby Randburg barely 25 minutes before.
From the outside the Soul Khaya looks like a revamped farm homestead, but right from your welcoming footbath on the traditional wide farmhouse verandah, you experience a subtle, understated elegance. The spa was one of the finalists in the Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards (2009) and I soon found out why.
At the Soul Khaya you need to be prepared to take things slowly. It's not the place for a hurried back massage, but definitely the place for a languid soul journey.
And that's exactly what owners Mandy Trollip and Michelle Rugani want you to have. Both are qualified Reiki practitioners, and want to address much more than the body with their spa's signature treatments. Mandy has been a beauty therapist for 20 years, and her strong interest in meditation, reiki and crystals resulted in the creation of a mindful, holistic spa treatment programme.
Mandy and Michelle both believe combining Africology-products (100% natural oils from plant extracts) with crystal therapy, meditation and ancient Indian Ayurvedic healing techniques, will result in a true body and soul therapy.
During a leisurely footbath ritual they explain their business philosophy of "taking home the journey". As they put it: if your soul benefits, your body’s benefit from the treatments will last much longer.
Reflect, restore and rejuvenate are therefore keywords at Soul Khaya.
Their philosophy is best explained by the seven signature rituals offered at the spa:
Embrace (honouring our connection to life)
Love (honouring oneself and the connection of souls)
Inspire (stress relieving)
Courage ( a soul journey)
Vitality (a soul journey for younger people)
Trust (Intuitive spirit therapy)
Gratitude (for the mindful spirit)
All these signature rituals consist of a variety of rituals combined with a long lasting treatment in mind. Ear candling, for instance, is an ancient practice of gently removing excess ear wax, relieving nasal and head congestion.
The gratitude treatment is a perfect example of this spa's special touch. It includes mindful meditation, creating mindful memoirs with the aid of a gratitude journal and spending time outside under the shady trees. "If you write things down and look at it later, it might explain your thought processes," Michelle explains.
Upon arrival, one also gets to choose a specially inscribed pebble that is used as your affirmation stone throughout your sessions. (Mine was inscribed with the word gratitude).
The floral footbath not only acts as a welcoming gesture and sign of respect, but also as a ritual cleansing ceremony to prepare you for a private meditation before you start your therapy.
Meditation might at first sound like a strange thing to do at a spa, but for me (a new kid on the block when it comes to meditation) it made perfect sense to concentrate on relaxing before the actual therapy. Being in a relaxed state of mind heightened my senses to the luxurious experience of a full body massage with different Africology-products chosen carefully for its therapeutic experience as well as healing essences. It felt like a full day of pampering, even though I spent just under three hours in the hands of the very capable therapist.
Soul Khaya offers a variety of treatments, ranging from milk baths and aroma therapeutic full body massages to Indian head massages and hot stone therapy conducted with your choice of crystals. I chose rose quartz, a crystal that symbolizes love, peace and tranquility.
Each treatment room has its own private balcony overlooking the farm, adding to the sense of tranquility one experiences from the moment of setting foot at this spa-with-a-difference. There is also a jacuzzi available to add even more pleasure to your spa-experience, and if you choose to, some of your treatments can take place in the garden.
The light lunch was, once again, a very stylish, earthy affair. No shortcuts are taken here, it seems. The green salad , with fresh leafy herbs and delectably oven roasted baby potatoes and tiny onions and vegetables , was brimming with freshness and taste, and the quiche was the best I have eaten in years. Enjoying it on my own private little balcony with Mother Nature’s midday solitude as my only other guest, was the perfect end to a perfect spa experience.". Ilse Salzwedel, Gauteng, SA. |

"I discovered the Soul Khaya some time ago and the Crystal Connection sounded wonderful but was pure bliss.
It so so much more than a massage and a non intrusive way of releasing old patterns and bringing healing and balance.
I now need this connection at least every month or two and find it such a beautiful and peaceful process.
I do think that I have found the best treatment in Gauteng!
Thank you!". Karin, Centurion. |
